An alert grandmother helped the occupants of a home destroyed by fire escape without injury, firefighters say.
The woman was outside shortly after 5 a.m. Monday when she noticed smoke coming from the front door of the home in the 500 block of South Emerald Road, according to a news release from Yakima County Fire District 5.
She went back inside to alert everyone to leave the home, Capt. Joel Byam said in the news release.
The 2,000-square-foot home, owned by Doroteo Alvarez, was declared a total loss, Byam said. Two cars were also destroyed. The damage was valued at $160,000.
The occupants did not know how the fire started. Other adults who live at the home were away at the time, caring for an ill child at a Seattle hospital, Byam said.
The investigation was turned over to the Yakima County fire marshal’s office.
The residents were being assisted by relatives and the American Red Cross.
