A Kennewick teen was killed Thursday in a high-impact crash that flipped a pickup on its side and scattered debris from the wrecked motorcycle about a half-block down the street.
Tanner R. Holman, 17, died instantly after his Suzuki motorcycle collided with a pickup truck in the intersection of West 45th Avenue and South Olympia Street, said Benton County Coroner John Hansens.
Holman was speeding on west on 45th, and witnesses reported he was doing wheelies before he approached the stop sign at Olympia Street, said Kennewick police Sgt. Mike Genack.
A car was stopped at the stop sign, but Holman apparently went around the car and ran right through the stop sign, he said.
Holman slammed into the side of a black Ford pickup that was pulling a small drift boat. The truck was going north on Olympia Street and had the right-of-way, Genack said. The wreck happened at about 4:10 p.m.
When officers and Kennewick paramedics got to the intersection, citizens were administering CPR but Holman was pronounced dead at Kennewick General Hospital.
Holman reportedly had just gotten the motorcycle about a month ago. Herald records show he just received his GED degree from Columbia Basin College.
The truck driver, a 35-year-old Kennewick man, was not hurt in the collision, though his pickup was thrown on its side. The man lives nearby and was on his way home after a day of fishing, Genack said.
Bystanders gathered around the intersection, while Kennewick police traffic officers investigated the wreck.
Several commented on how dangerous the intersection is because of the number of drivers who run the stop sign. One person said, "It's like playing Russian roulette here."
"I've seen people blow right through," said Kevin Hollenbeck, who was riding a bike by the scene with his wife, Diane.
The city of Kennewick is planning to build a roundabout at the intersection, but the couple said more stop signs should be put up in the meantime.
"Why the city can't spend a couple hundred bucks and make it a four-way stop is beyond me," said Kevin Hollenbeck.
