A cooler and wetter June than usual is predicted for the Tri-Cities by the National Weather Service.
In an average June, normal highs in the Tri-Cities rise from 78 degrees at the start of the month to 86 degrees at the end of the month. Normal lows rise from 54 degrees to 59 degrees. Normal precipitation is 0.51 inch.
May also was slightly cooler than normal in the Tri-Cities and also at Hanford. No temperature records were set at Hanford, where the Hanford Meteorological Station keeps records back to 1945.
The average temperature in the Tri-Cities in May was 61.5 degrees, which was 0.5 degree below normal, according to the weather service.
Highs averaged 74 degrees, which was 0.5 degree below normal. The highest temperature, as measured in Kennewick, was 92 degrees on May 15. On two days temperatures rose into the 90s.
Lows averaged 49 degrees, which was 0.5 degree below normal. The lowest temperature, as measured in Kennewick, was 39 degrees on May 11.
At Hanford, temperatures averaged 61.1 degrees, which was 1 degree below normal. The warmest temperature was 96 degrees on May 15 and the coolest was 35 degrees on May 6.
The spring months of March through May at Hanford were slightly cooler than normal at Hanford, averaging 53.9 degrees, which was 0.1 degree below normal.
Precipitation for the month in the Tri-Cities totaled 0.26 inch, which was 0.38 inch below normal. The heaviest rain was 0.17 inch on May 21.
Precipitation for the year also is below normal. It totaled 3.43 inches at the end of May, which is 0.36 inch below normal. Since October, the start of the water year, precipitation in Tri-Cities has totaled 4.13 inches, which is 2.39 inches below normal.
Precipitation at Hanford was just 43 percent of normal at 0.22 inch in May. The spring months of March through May had 1.47 inches of precipitation, which is below the normal of 1.63 inches. But for the year, precipitation is at 3.23 inches which is very close to the normal of 3.27 inches.
The peak wind gust in the Tri-Cities in May was 48 mph on May 3 and the peak wind gust at Hanford was 42 mph the same day.
