YAKIMA -- An 18-month-old child drowned in a canal near a relative's home in Yakima early Saturday afternoon.
Tanner Morrison was with his family and other children at the home in the 200 block of North 34th Street when adults lost sight of him for about a minute, according to a news release from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
Family members searched inside and outside the home, which is to the north of the canal, as well as surrounding houses before calling 911.
Law enforcement and emergency responders walked the canal before finding Tanner about 100 yards south of Terrace Heights Drive.
CPR was performed on the child and he was transported to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
