Extra DUI patrols during the St. Patrick's Day weekend sent 55 Tri-City drivers to jail on suspicion of being impaired while behind the wheel, officials said Tuesday.
There were no serious injury or fatal crashes in the Tri-Cities during the emphasis patrols. In Walla Walla County, law enforcement made 112 traffic stops over the weekend and had one DUI arrest.
Statewide, 1,063 drivers were arrested for DUI.
Officials said the numbers in the Tri-Cities were lower this year than in 2011 when 64 suspected drunken drivers were arrested.
Law enforcement officials credit public education and strict enforcement for reducing DUI crashes and fatalities.
Officers from the Kennewick, Pasco, Richland and West Richland police departments, Benton County and Franklin County sheriff's offices and the Washington State Patrol participated in the DUI enforcement campaign.
