Hanford High School in Richland took first place Saturday in the Department of Energy's Regional Science Bowl held at Washington State University Tri-Cities.
The winning team will represent the region at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., in April. The team includes Andrey Sushko, Arill Bartrand, Sriram Katipamula, Jonah Bartrand, Hayden Lenz and coach Cathy Stordeur.
Richland High School took third place with a team that included Syd Ullrich, Ellen Liu, Melody Qiu, Katrina Hui, and coach Brent Potter. Southridge High School in Kennewick took fourth place with a team that included Zach Hill, Megan O'Leary, Forrest Hill, Matthew Eder and coach Tammy Neslin.
West Valley High in Yakima fielded the second place team.
Three All Star Awards were awarded to students who answered the most toss-up questions in the round robin contest. They went to Jessica Rhodes of West Valley High, who answered 55 questions; Sushko of Hanford High, who answered 38 questions, and Sathvic Ramanan of Hanford High, who answered 33 questions.
