2 vigils planned for Richland High teens

Two vigils are planned for Richland High School teenagers who died in October. A candlelight vigil will be at 6 p.m. today near the Richland site where Sierra Murray was struck by a car six weeks ago.

The 16-year-old died Oct. 28, a week after a car struck the Richland High School student while she was crossing Thayer Drive near the school auditorium.

Tonight's vigil will be in the school parking lot by the intersection of Thayer Drive and Longfitt Street.

The youth pastor from the church Sierra attended will lead an opening prayer, said Terry Murray, Sierra's father. After the prayer, friends and family of the young woman can share their memories.

The family has set up an account at U.S. Bank to help offset funeral expenses -- the Sierra Murray Memorial Fund.

On Saturday night, Austin Katayama's family is organizing a vigil to spread the word about suicide awareness.

Katayama, 18, of West Richland, a senior at Richland High School, died Oct. 15 after falling from a grain elevator in rural Benton County.

The vigil begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be next to the Playground of Dreams at Columbia Park in Kennewick.
