An early morning crash on Highway 397 was caused by a Pasco teen who tried to pass another car and collided with a Richland man's car, troopers said.
Carlos Gabriel Farias Jr., 17, was driving north on the highway just south of Bryson Brown Road in his 1992 Ford Explorer when he tried to pass another vehicle, the Washington State Patrol said.
Farias collided with a 1999 Volvo driven by Dan Brown, 61, of Richland, who was in the southbound lane.
Brown was taken to Kennewick General Hospital then transferred to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland. He is in critical condition.
Farias was not hurt. Troopers said the crash was caused by inattention and Farias could be cited with negligent driving.
