Grant to help police combat gang issues

A $38,000 grant from the U.S. Attorney's Office of Eastern Washingtonwill help Tri-City law enforcement battle gang issues.

The money will be used for investigations, gang prevention training, overtime costs for public education meetings and paying for a language interpreter as needed at the public education meetings.

The grant is the fifth -- and second-largest -- received from the U.S. Attorney's Office since 2007. Previous amounts were $42,400 in 2007, $25,000 in 2008, $35,000 in 2009 and $23,000 last year.

The grant will cover Kennewick, Richland and Pasco police departments and the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
