Ephrata cyclist killed after turning in front of driver

MATTAWA -- An Ephrata man riding a bicycle on Highway 243 north of Mattawa was killed Friday when he turned in front of an oncoming car driven by Rodney Deaton of Benton City.

David Donald Moore, 65, was pronounced dead at Yakima Regional Medical Center, according to Washington State Police. His family has been notified.

About 3:30 p.m., Moore was riding southbound on Highway 243, about eight miles north of Mattawa, when he turned left onto a side road, crossing the northbound lane.

Moore turned into the path of a northbound Ford Focus driven by Deaton. The car struck Moore, who was thrown onto the shoulder of the highway.

The WSP said no drugs or alcohol were involved and determined Moore had caused the accident by not yielding to the Ford. Deaton was not cited. Deaton and his two passengers wore their seat belts and were not injured in the accident, the WSP said.
