BASIN CITY -- Students at Basin City Elementary School are being told to stay home today because of bad water.
North Franklin School District officials decided to cancel classes because of city water contamination.
E.coli bacteria was detected Thursday during routine water quality monitoring, said state Department of Health officials. Five more samples were tested throughout the water distribution system and coliform bacteria was found in three of the samples, indicating that some type of contamination is getting into the water system.
Health officials have been working with the utility to find the source of the contamination.

Basin City residents have been urged to boil their tap water used for drinking, tooth brushing, food preparation, ice and washing dishes. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute, then cooled before using.
School district officials said the elementary campus will be closed until further notice for the safety of the students and staff.
