Egyptian scientist will speak Friday in Richland

Fadel Erian, a retired Battelle scientist and native of Egypt, will be guest speaker Friday at the Tri-City Democrats' monthly meeting in Richland.

Erian, who lives in the Tri-Cities, will talk on "The Arab Spring and Building Democracy in Egypt."

He recently returned from Egypt and will provide insight on the uprisings and predictions for the Middle East as Egyptians create a new system of government.

Erian survived several upheavals, including the Cairo fires in 1952 and the army-led revolution that exiled King Farouk.

He was a conscripted soldier in the Suez War and will share memories of when British troops occupied Egypt.

A potluck dinner begins at 6 p.m. at the Richland Labor Hall, 1305 Knight St.

The meeting and presentation start at 7 p.m. All are open to the public.
