The six winners in the Mid-Columbia Earth Month Kids Essay and Video Contest held earlier this month were announced Friday when representatives from the Mid-Columbia Earth Month group and contest sponsor Mission Support Alliance visited the students' classrooms.
This is the first year for the essay and video contest.
Seven entries were received by area school children who demonstrated how to conserve resources and protect the environment.
Entries are posted online at earthmonthmc.org.
-- First place for group video went to Meg Nelson, Logan Jackson and Kali Saueressig from Ruth Livingston School in Pasco for their Pasco's Totally Awesome Earth Cleaners. The group will share a $250 cash prize.
-- Lucy Allen of Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Richland took the first place individual video award of $100 for her video and song, Richland Fought the Battle of Trash.
-- Tied for first place in the essay contest were: Kathleen Dirham, Cascade Elementary School in Kennewick, for her essay, Keeping it Green and Naveena Bontham, Enterprise Middle School in Richland for her essay, Let's Go Green. They each received $100.
-- Jennifer Gonzalez, second-grade teacher at Cascade Elementary School, received a special recognition award for her environmental stewardship in the classroom.
-- People's Choice Awards also went to the Pasco's Totally Awesome Earth Cleaners video and the Let's Go Green essay.
