Hydraulic oil has been spilled into the Potholes East Canal near Othello, the state Department of Ecology reported Friday afternoon.
Agency officials were responding to determine how to handle it, according to a state news release.
The Grant County PUD told the state it was performing routine maintenance at a canal lift station when a gate seal failed. The amount of hydraulic oil spilled was not immediately known, but the PUD reported it could be up to 250 gallons.
The PUD reported that it immediately placed an absorbent boom in the area to prevent the spill from spreading down the canal.
The Potholes East Canal drains out of Potholes Reservoir and is used to irrigate farmland in the area.
