Drivers ordered by a judge to attend a traffic safety class also would learn how to drive safely around bicyclists and pedestrians under a bill by Rep. Brad Klippert, R-Kennewick, that unanimously passed the state House of Representatives on Monday.
HB 1129 would require specific training in traffic safety courses, which some courts use as a sentencing option for drivers who have committed traffic infractions. The curriculum would be provided to the state for free by the nonprofit Bicycle Alliance of Washington. The bill next goes to the Senate.
