Longtime Walla Walla educator dies at age 70

WALLA WALLA -- A longtime Walla Walla educator known for his kindness and compassion died last week after a long struggle with illness.

Abe Roberts was 70. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Gail; their two children, Richele and Lonnie; grandchildren and countless friends.

Although retired since 2002, Roberts kept close ties to former coworkers, some also retired and some who continue to work.

Roberts came to Walla Walla in 1965 and began teaching at Pioneer Junior High School, then was a counselor at Pioneer, and spent some time at Garrison Junior High School, where he worked beside Chubb.

Roberts eventually moved to Walla Walla High School as an assistant principal and led Pioneer as principal briefly before taking on the top leadership job at Wa-Hi in 1990; he would stay at Wa-Hi until his retirement in 2002.
