Unusual lights in Kennewick sky on NYE

KENNEWICK -- Several Kennewick residents reported seeing unusual objects in the night sky the last hour of 2010.

Three light orange orbs drifted low across the sky, said Lupe Martinez of Kennewick. Her son also saw them and she called 911, she said. One of them appeared to converge with another, she said.

Roy Gephart, the Herald's astronomy columnist, had no explanation for the sighting. The International Space Station may have been visible, but that would not account for the three objects in the sky.

One possibility is that some party balloons lighted with LED's might have gotten away or been released to celebrate the New Year.
