Dual Hanford-military retirees get health plan

Military retirees and their spouses who also are eligible for Hanford retirement benefits need to be aware of changes that could help them, Jim Kion said.

He is the director of the Military Retiree Activities Office and Veterans' Service Center in Room 138 of the Federal Building in Richland.

The Hanford Employee Welfare Trust program is changing to a program that puts money into an account for people on Medicare to pay for health insurance. Military retirees might now be eligible for the account in addition to their military health insurance.

Money in the account could be used through Extend Health to pay for some services not covered for military retirees, such as eye and dental care, Kion said.

However, the deadline for signing up is Dec. 31. Kion's office is offering to help with the paperwork from 10 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. For information, call 376-7588.
