Former OSP trooper arrested in theft cases
HERMISTON -- A former Oregon State Police trooper has been arrested for allegedly falsifying his time cards and stealing gas with a department-issued credit card, officials said.
Anthony Andrew Atkins, 40, was booked into the Umatilla County jail Monday afternoon on suspicion of three counts of first-degree theft, four counts of second-degree theft and two counts of first-degree official misconduct.
He was then released pending a Dec. 7 arraignment in Umatilla County Circuit Court.
Atkins, a 16-year OSP veteran, resigned Oct. 31. He was last assigned to the Hermiston area and had been on paid leave since Aug. 4.
OSP officials started an internal investigation in August when Atkins' supervisor spotted discrepancies in his monthly time activity reports, officials said.
Baker County District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff was assigned as a special prosecutor to assist in the investigation and will prosecute the case.
Atkins is accused of claiming hours that he did not work, including overtime hours, beginning in January, officials said. The loss exceeded $5,000.
Atkins also allegedly used a department-issued gas card at a self-service facility. Officials say an audit showed he purchased more than $1,000 worth of gas for his personal car over a three-year period.
