Tri-City area high school students can take the first step toward winning up to $13,000 in scholarships Saturday.
The scholarships come from the Loyal Order of Moose. They reward high school students who educate younger children about making safe and healthy choices.
Students in grades 9 to 12 compete for three scholarships of up to $1,000 at the local level. The winner of that contest goes to the Moose International student congress, where the top prize is a $13,000 scholarship, said Fred McHenry, state youth awareness coordinator.
The Kennewick Moose Lodge will host the local student congress from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. No registration is required.

Students need to develop short presentations to groups of 4- to 9-year-olds, McHenry said. Competing students give three or more presentations by the end of February and submit a summary report to McHenry.
