Tapteal Elementary wins reading program award

Tapteal Elementary is one of four schools in the state to win the 2010 Title I Distinguished School Award, said the Richland School District.

Tapteal's staff was recognized for significantly improving student achievement in reading. Students participate in daily reading activities that are tailored to each student's skill level, said Principal Rhonda Pratt.

Teachers work in teams to address skill deficiencies, and the school has switched to a specialized teaching model, in which fifth-grade teachers focus on specific skills and students rotate to four teachers each day.

The school will receive $5,000 to use to send two staff members to the 2011 National Title I Conference in Florida next year.
