A Walla Walla police officer shocked a man with a Taser gun Sunday night after breaking up a gang fight in the middle of the street, authorities said.

More than 20 people -- many suspected of being local gang members -- were involved or watching the melee when a lone officer was called to the 100 block of Donald Street about 7 p.m., said Officer Tim Bennett.

Most of the people fled when the officer arrived, but two continued to fight and had to be ordered several times to stop, he said.

One person was shocked with a Taser when he refused to follow orders not to leave the area, Bennett said.

As other officers arrived, numerous people were contacted and identified, but no arrests were made.

Two vehicles in the area were also damaged during the incident, but the victims did not want to pursue charges, Bennett said.

The fight is being investigated by the department's gang unit.
