YAKIMA -- Drivers heading east on Interstate 82 will notice a major traffic shift at Union Gap.
The Washington State Department of Transportation is moving traffic onto temporary eastbound lanes on I-82.
Meanwhile, the existing eastbound on- and off-ramps at the Valley Mall Boulevard interchange will be closed. New on- and off-ramps will be located north of the Gearjammer truck stop on North Rudkin Road.
The change will improve traffic flow in the construction zone, DOT spokeswoman Meagan McFadden said in a news release. The permanent on- and off-ramps for eastbound traffic are slated to open by late November.
Until then, motorists on Valley Mall Boulevard who want to travel east on I-82 can use the temporary Rudkin Road on-ramp or drive south on Main Street and use the South Union Gap interchange.
The new changes will not affect access to the interstate's westbound lanes.
The Valley Mall Boulevard interchange is being reconfigured over the next year and a half to include three roundabouts. The project's cost is $34.3 million.
