A wine tasting event with live music to raise money for a group that helps needy students is at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Tagaris Winery in Richland.
The event is a fundraiser for Invest Ed, formerly known as the Saul and Dayee G. Haas Foundation. The organization provides grants to secondary schools -- including several in the Mid-Columbia -- to help students pay for everything from sports fees to advanced placement test costs.
"We're supporting kids," said Debbie Williams, business manager for the Columbia-Burbank School District and an Invest Ed board member.
"A lot of these activities we help kids with are encouraging them to stay in school, do better in school. It gives them one more opportunity to learn a new talent, or task, or skill," she said.

The Columbia-Burbank district has worked with the foundation for years. This year, the middle school and high school each got grants, Williams said.
The amount of money that Invest Ed gives to Mid-Columbia schools is growing, according to information from the group. In 2006-07, the group gave $8,479 to area schools, and in 2008-09 the figure was $21,483, the information said.
The fundraiser will feature wine tasting, speakers and live music by Lisa Mann on the outdoor patio. To RSVP, go to investedtricities.event brite.com For more on Invest Ed, go to haasfoundation.org. Tagaris Winery is at 844 Tulip Lane.
