Friends of Badger Mountain observed the fifth anniversary of the acquisition of the Badger Mountain Centennial Preserve with a ceremony Monday at Trailhead Park.
Richland Mayor John Fox and Benton County Commissioner Jim Beaver were expected to speak at the event marking the purchase of the original 574 acres. Some Friends of Badger members also commemorated the event with a summer solstice hike of the mountain, said President Sharon Grant.
This year, volunteers helped build the new Sagebrush Trail on Badger to help relieve pressure on the main Canyon Trail. More work will be done on the southern portion of the trail this fall, she said.
"It definitely takes a community to undertake an effort like this to preserve special habitat," Grant said.
