Lourdes Medical Center in Pasco has added new technology for diagnosing and staging lung cancer, a news release said.
The endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration system is more accurate, safer and convenient for patients than traditional methods, the news release said.
“Prior to (the system) being available at Lourdes, our local patients had to travel to Seattle or Portland to receive this safer, less invasive procedure,” said Dr. Jaz Matharu, in a news release. “This procedure is relatively simple so we want to make this procedure equally as easy for patients to access.”
The system uses ultrasound imaging and an aspiration needle designed for taking biopsies and staging cancer inside the lung, the release said. “This equipment provides access to the lungs without the patient having to undergo traditional surgery. No surgery means no recovery time, less likelihood of complications and infection,” Matharu added in the release.
