Hospice at The Chaplaincy was recognized for its hispanic outreach program, Companeros en la Jornada, at the Tri-City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Shining Lights Gala.
The organization won the Latino Health Care Professional of the Year award, a Chaplaincy news release said.
Through the outreach program, an in-home hospice care team that includes a bilingual and bicultural nurse, nursing assistant, chaplain and social worker work with patients and families to develop care plans that incorporate the patient’s culture and belief systems, the news release said.
“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award”, Judy Westerberg, director of Hospice, said in the release. “The team, Blanca Cortinas, MSW; Maria Lopez, NAC; Anita Mundy, RN; and Victor Ortega, Chaplain; has worked incredibly hard to turn their dream of providing bilingual and bicultural hospice care into a reality. They are all very passionate about this work and feel very honored to compassionately and sensitively bring peace and comfort to Hispanic families at end of life.”
