Keep eye on income tax refund with app

Track your income tax refund and access easy-to-understand tax tips using IRS2Go, a free smart phone application available from the Internal Revenue Service.

"This new smart phone app makes it easy for people on the go to access the information they need, when they need it," said David Tucker, field media relations for the IRS, from his Seattle office. "The app is brand new, just released this past Monday."

Apple users can download the free IRS2Go application by visiting the Apple App Store. Android users can visit the Android Marketplace to download the free IRS2Go app.

The mobile app, Tucker said, is among just a handful in the federal government.

"And there's not need to worry, it's safe and secure," he said.

Using the application you can:

-- Check your refund status by entering your Social Security number, which is masked and encrypted for security purposes. Next, pick the filing status you used and, finally, enter the amount you expect to receive.

Those who file electronically can track the status of their refund within 72 hours after receiving an e-mail saying the IRS received their tax return. Those filing paper tax returns will need to wait three to four weeks before they can check their refund status.

-- Receive tax updates by entering your e-mail address. During tax filing season you'll receive simple, straightforward tips and reminders daily, periodically the rest of the year.
