Rob Hotakainen is replacing Les Blumenthal as the Tri-City Herald's reporter in the McClatchy Newspapers news bureau in Washington, D.C.
Blumenthal is retiring after serving as the Herald's Washington, D.C. reporter since 1990. Before taking the job there, he had worked for The Associated Press and directed AP's coverage of the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980. Early in his career, he was a reporter for the Spokesman-Review in Spokane.
Hotakainen will be new to Herald readers, but he's not new to Washington, D.C. He joined the McClatchy Washington Bureau as a correspondent for the Star Tribune of Minneapolis in 1999 and became the Minneapolis team leader in 2000, a position he held until 2007.
A native of Minnesota, he worked as a reporter for the Star Tribune for 12 years before moving to Washington, D.C. He was the Washington, D.C. correspondent for the Kansas City Star for a year before moving to the California beat in June 2008 to write for The Sacramento Bee and The San Luis Obispo Tribune.
