A superfast mobile internet service will be unveiled today in the Tri-Cities by Clearwire Corp.
The Kirkland-based company is a leading provider of wireless broadband services in metro markets across the U.S.
The new service will allow consumers to connect to the web at home or on the go -- in the Clear coverage area -- with download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps with bursts of more than 10 mbps and upload speed of up to 1 mbps. In the Tri-Cities, Clear covers more than 800 square miles and more than 206,000 people with service extending west to Benton City and southeast to Hermiston and Pendleton.
The service, which also is being made available today in Yakima, parts of California, New York and Oregon, is based on WiMax technology that uses fixed, local radio cells to provide high-speed internet access via an air interface. The technology is similar to Wi-Fi, but has a broader footprint.
"Our system is a proprietary network, " said Tim Ross, Clearwire's regional general manager. "It's four times faster than 3G."
Consumers can connect to Clear 4G service via a modem, mobile device, or a 4G embedded laptop or netbook, he said.
They can use portable Wi-Fi routers -- Clear Spot 4G and Clear Spot 4G+ -- that can be set on a table top for multiple users or they can use approved USB devices for mobile internet service. They get 4G coverage wherever it's available and expanded 3G coverage across the nation. The 4G+ is provided in partnership with Sprint, Ross said. Consumers can buy or lease the devices.
Clear offers unlimited usage plans without long-term service contracts, Ross said. In most cases, unlimited service at home starts at $30 a month plus taxes and mobile plans start at $40 a month plus taxes. Consumers can even bundle services and get discounts.
Consumers can buy a variety of Clear products and services at Clear retail stores at 2810 W. Kennewick Ave. in Kennewick and 2401 S. First St. in Yakima and at local Best Buy and Radio Shack stores.
