Human services chief named in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA -- Walla Walla County commissioners have hired Daryl Daugs of Bremerton as the new director of the Department of Human Services.

Daugs has extensive experience in management, as well as in securing and oversight of public and private grants and contracts for human services and personnel development. For the past 15 years he has focused on advocating for children and families in need.

His most recent position was as executive director for the Community for Youth in Seattle, where he oversaw operations of a dropout and violence prevention program in Seattle public schools.

While he's lived most of his life on the west side of the state, his family has deep roots in Walla Walla. His mother's family helped settle the area in the 1800s and his father is a graduate of the Wa-Hi.

Daugs will begin his new position March 15. His salary has been set at $78,000 a year.

Dave Hopper, who has been serving as interim director of the department, will return to his position as assistant director.
