PASCO -- Discount Video on Pasco's Court Street is closing next week, unable to fight off the competition from national chains.
Store owner Dan Marquez, 45, said companies like Redbox have taken away so much business that independent video store operators can't survive.
"Feb. 7 will be our last day," said Marquez, who started the business in 1984.
He plans to sell the store's collection of 15,000 to 18,000 DVDs and VHS tapes at deep discounts.
In the '80s and early '90s, the store pulled in revenues up to a half-million dollars a year, said Marquez, who also owns Pasco Towing.
He even opened a second store in Othello in the early '90s.
But business started to fall beginning in the '90s when the chain Crazy Mike's Video set up shop in the Tri-Cities.
It's sad to close the store where many family members worked for years, Marquez said. His mother, who is one of the two last employees, will retire, while his other employee found another job.
