Cardinal Francis George of Chicago is visiting Yakima, with events continuing today and Oct. 12. The archbishop served in Yakima in the '90s.
He'd planned a trip back to the area in March but had to cancel because of illness, according to a Diocese of Yakima news release.
"We're very pleased the cardinal is able to come this time," Yakima Bishop Joseph Tyson said in the news release.
George will give a talk today during the 9 a.m. morning prayer at Holy Family Parish in Yakima. He'll also be a keynote speaker at a Celebration of Faith event starting at 6 p.m. at the Yakima Convention Center.
On Oct. 12, he'll celebrate Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Cathedral in Yakima. A public reception will follow.
George has led the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago for about 17 years. Archbishop Blase Cupich of Spokane is taking over in November.
