Members of the Kennewick Masonic Lodge No. 153 are holding a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee's in Kennewick.
The event is a fundraiser for the Masons' Bikes-for-Books program. Twice a year, the lodge gives about a dozen bikes to Kennewick elementary students. Not all schools in the district participate in the program each year because Mason funds are limited.
The Kennewick Masons also give bikes to Mid-Columbia Libraries for its summer reading program.
Each time students read a book or do an assignment outside their required reading, their names are placed in a drawing for a bike. The more the students read, the better their chances of winning.
Tickets for the pancake breakfast are $7 each and include live music, face painting and drawings for donated merchandise. Applebee's is at 606 N. Columbia Center Blvd. in Kennewick. For more information, call 531-8440.
The book: Moorish Fusion Cuisine, Conquering the New World by Zouhair Zairi.
Best for: Authentic Moorish cuisine fused with new elements and an eye for lighter ingredients. Zairi enjoys using traditional ingredients, like rose petals, orange blossom water, and precious argan oil, in new ways.
The author says his approach is to showcase the ingredients and keep it simple. He said he has a knack of combining herbs and spices and transforming them into complex, aromatic blends that he sprinkles onto meat, poultry and fish.
