UPDATE: Philippines Rocked by Deadly 7.8 Earthquake

At least 32 people are dead and hundreds injured after a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated the southern Philippines at approximately 7:37am Monday (local time). The epicenter was about 20 miles deep, located just offshore from the city of General Santos. Since the big quake, there has been more than 130 aftershocks in the area, some boasting magnitudes above 6.0.

A deadly landslide in the Sarangani Province was responsible for many of the fatalities. Meanwhile, there has been significant structural damage in and around General Santos, with numerous building collapses. Widespread power outages and infrastructure damage is felt across much of the island of Mindanao.

A tsunami reaching as high as 3 feet impacted many beaches of the Philippines. Smaller tsunami signals reached as far as Indonesia, Palau, and Japan.

This was the strongest quake to impact the Philippines so far in 2026, and one of the deadliest in recent years. This event also occurred on the first day of the school year for millions of students across Mindanao, leading to widespread school closures.
