LAKEWOOD — The Southridge girls soccer team beat Prairie 1-0 in the third-fourth place game at the WIAA 3A state championships Saturday at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood, giving the Suns a third-place trophy.
Michelle Foster scored on a cross from Heather Johnson in the 15th minute, a goal that held up over the remaining 65 minutes of the game.
Johnson dribbled down the left side of the field and sent the ball to the middle with her left foot. The ball undershot Foster, causing the freshman midfielder to reverse direction to retrieve the ball at the top of the 18-yard box. Once Foster gained control, she whipped around and unleashed a right-footed shot from 20 yards that dipped into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
This was Southridge's first-ever appearance at the state soccer semifinals and accounted for the second-highest team finish for the school in any sport. The Suns baseball team won the 3A state championship in 2004.
