Mr. Movie

The Sapphires a wonderful biopic

The Sapphires is based on the true story of two Aboriginal sisters and two friends from Australia who ended up singing soul music for U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. The film is co-written by Tony Briggs and is based on her play. The material comes from stories told to Briggs by her mom and aunt.

Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids) plays Dave Lovelace. He's a person of questionable ethics who runs a local talent contest. Three sisters catch his attention. They can really sing. One thing leads to another, and he signs them for the Vietnam tour.

This is a heartwarming and sometimes fascinating romantic comedy/drama with great performances from O'Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Australian pop star Jessica Mauboy, Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens.

And the music is terrific as well.
