Race on the River

The annual Tri-City Water Follies/Lamb Weston Columbia Cup unlimited hydroplane races and HAPO Over the River air show are July 27-29 at Columbia Park in Kennewick.

Hydroplane time trials take place each morning. You can catch all the up-do-date news and videos of what's going on during Follies weekend at tricityherald.com.

The air show features some of the country's top aerobatics pilots doing their daredevil stunts, including Mike Wiskus with Lucas Oil Air Shows, John Klatt with John Klatt Airshows, a Coast Guard helicopter rescue demonstration, the Air Force Heritage demo, former Army flight trainer Gregory "Wired" Colyer, Misty Blues skydiving demo, and an exhibition by the Aero Vodochody L-39C Firecat jet flown by Air Force veteran Rich Perkins.

The Windermere Group One Kids Zone, at the east end of the park, will be open July 28-29 with inflatables and other activities, including two stage shows geared toward youngsters. Kids Zone admission is free.

The Oh Boy! Oberto radio-controlled hydro races are July 27-29. The race course will be on the family fishing pond at the east end of the park. There is no spectator fee other than admission to the park.

The bike paths along the Columbia River on the Kennewick and Pasco shoreline will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 28-29 during the races.

Tickets

A two-day pass for July 28-29 is $25 for adults and $10 for kids 6 to 12, with kids 5 and younger free.

Admission for July 28 only is $15 for adults, $5 for kids 6 to 12 and free for kids 5 and younger.

Race day admission for July 29 only is $25 for adults, $5 for kids 6 to 12 and free for kids 5 and younger.

A one-day pit pass is $10 on July 27-29.

Three-day pit passes are $45 and include admission to the park, but parking is an additional $5.

Parking fees are $5 per car for July 27-28, and $10 per car July 29.

Art in the Park

Another popular event staged during Water Follies week is the 62nd annual Allied Arts Art in the Park, which is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 27 and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 28 in Howard Amon Park in Richland.

The festival will feature artists and crafters with a wide range of offerings from photography to jewelry and from metal art to furniture. Pottery, paintings and glass art also will be featured, along with food booths and music.

The transit buses also will offer service to those attending Art in the Park. The shuttles run both days from Fran Rish Stadium at Richland High School and from Carmichael Middle School to the Richland Community Center next to the park from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 27 and from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 28. Cost is $1.50 each way, or $4 for a family of five each way.

Transit Service

Ben-Franklin Transit will offer rides to and from Columbia Park on July 28-29. The fare is $1.50 each way, with kids 5 and younger free. There also is a $4 family rate for up to five people each way.

Service will run hourly into the park from Richland and Kennewick transit centers between 9 a.m. and noon. A small bus will run hourly out of the park at noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., returning to Knight Street Transit Center in Richland and Huntington Transit Center in Kennewick.

There is no bus service to the Pasco viewing areas on the river.

Buses leave the park 15 minutes after the final event each day. Dial-A-Ride service also is available. For reservations, call 735-0160.
