Movies in park set for summer

Movies on the River will be rolling again this summer.

The city of Kennewick and U.S. Cellular are again sponsoring a series of four, free family-friendly movies in June and July in Columbia Park.

"We've had as many as a thousand people, of all ages, out there having fun, watching the movies," said Greg Sambrano of Kennewick's Recreation and Community Services department.

On June 19 and July 31, U.S. Cellular will provide free bouncy toys for the children to play on.

On June 26, the city of Kennewick will have a civic night and invite the Mariners to visit with the crowd and have some simple games for the children. July 10 is the city's public safety night, and Kennewick firefighters and police will share safety tips and display their vehicles.

The free movies are all G rated. Families are encouraged to make a party of it and pack up a picnic for dinner plus some soft drinks and snacks to munch on during the movie. No chairs will be provided, but everyone is welcome to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on.

"You might bring a garbage bag too," Sambrano said. "We have large Dumpsters out there, but you won't want to run over to them for just a candy wrapper."

Remember, alcohol is not permitted in the park except for special events.
