Gear up for hot time this weekend at Richland's Cool Desert Nights

The Kingsmen will rock the street dance at this year's Cool Desert Nights celebration in Richland, which kicks off today for two days of hot rod nostalgia.

The dance starts at 9 p.m. today in the parking lot at the Uptown Shopping Center. Tickets are $10 at the gate, and all ages are welcome.

But before the Louie Louie guys start rockin' there will be plenty of cool cars to gawk at starting at 11 a.m. at the Shilo Inn and again at 7 p.m. at the Uptown. That's when a plethora of vintage automobiles and hot rods will begin a caravan tour around town. Richland's main drag, George Washington Way, will be shut down for the show.

About 600 classic, antique and souped-up cars are expected to turn out for this year's Cool Desert Nights, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

Saturday events start at 7 a.m. when car owners check in to register their cars for the show. There'll also be a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in the gazebo at Jefferson Park across the street from the Uptown. Cost for the chow is $4.50.

The rest of the day will be packed with show 'n' shines, an antique aircraft display, music, vendors, kids games, slow drags, a barbecue and another street dance featuring the legendary Mike Harvey from the Super Gold Show, which starts at 8 p.m. in the Uptown's parking lot.
