Sacajawea Bluegrass Festival returns next weekend to Pasco's state park

It's one thing to hear great bluegrass music on the radio or on a CD through a great set of speakers, but it's still not as good as hearing it live.

And when the Sacajawea Bluegrass Festival gets under way next weekend, you'll get your fill of lively bluegrass starting at 5 p.m. June 13 at Sacajawea State Park off Highway 12 at the mouth of the Snake River.

Headlining this year's festival will be the Spring Creek Bluegrass Band from Colorado.

The roster also includes Captain Gravel, Bill Monroe, Molly and Tenbrooks, Top String and the Columbia River Bluegrass Band. And you'll experience plenty of other cowboy music and poetry throughout weekend.

There'll be about 18 hours of concerts during the three-day festival. Advance ticket prices for a weekend pass are $20 each. The price goes up to $25 at the gate. Individual day admission is $10 for June 13 events, $15 for day and evening events June 14. The June 15 gospel concerts are free, but donations are welcome.

Tickets are available at Tri-City Ranch & Home stores or at www.sacajaweabluegrass.org.

For those wishing to spend the weekend in the park's campground, there is a $12 fee each night per vehicle. The park opens at 7 a.m. each day, and the gates close at 10 p.m. each night. Those staying past that hour need to contact the park ranger in advance.

Besides all the music happening throughout the festival, there also will be Dutch oven demonstrations and mouth-watering samplings.

And if that isn't enough to entice you out of the house, then how about the chance to let your kids learn to play bluegrass music?

The festival's youth bluegrass activities center features Tri-City music educator Chick Rose.

There is no charge for this event.
