Luoc Van Nguyen and his wife, Trang, have been helping customers choose the perfect custom engagement ring or wristwatch for more than three decades as the owners of Van’s Jewelry in Kennewick.
After moving to the Tri-Cities from Vietnam in 1975, Nguyen decided it was time to learn a new trade, and he decided on jewelry for a simple reason: “I like it,” he said.
He learned the trade while working at McVicker’s Jewelry in Richland, and in 1984 he opened his own store.
“He didn’t have to go through the books; he just had to learn and be good with his hands,” employee Amita Biyani said. “He’s a great jeweler.”
Van’s specializes in custom jewelry and repair work. The business sources its diamonds from dealers in New York, California, Texas and beyond.
“You should see the sparkles in his eyes when he deals with the diamonds,” Biyani said.
Quality is key when it comes to diamonds and other jewelry the store carries, Biyani said.
“All the stuff we have — there’s no comparison with what we carry and all the chain stores. They are very well made. They are very different brands, very different styles, and he carries very high-quality diamonds. That’s what sets him apart from other jewelers. He believes in quality stuff. He has the eye for it, and he does it very well.”
Loyal customers have enabled the Nguyens’ store to become the go-to spot for high-class jewelry.
“Without all the support we have from the Tri-Cities area, there’s no way we could stay right here for 30 years,” Trang said.
