Man denies drive-by shooting

A 24-year-old man is being held on $100,000 bail on charges he fired four shots from a car, then forced his way into a home while trying to hide from police.

Randy Steven Rice Jr. of Kennewick pleaded innocent in Benton County Superior Court to drive-by shooting and first-degree criminal trespass. His trial is set for Jan. 4.

Benton County dispatch took a call at 7:28 a.m. Nov. 8 that the driver of a gold-colored vehicle had fired four shots out the window and was driving away from 27th Avenue and Gum Street in Kennewick. The caller described the driver as a man, possibly with facial hair, wearing a light-colored hoodie, court documents said.

A short time later, a sheriff's deputy saw a vehicle and driver matching that description on 19th Avenue. The deputy signaled for the car to stop, but the driver jumped out and ran.

A K-9 unit tracked Rice to a home in the 900 block of East 15th Avenue, where the resident said a man barged into his home "saying he needs a place to hide," court documents said. Rice was reportedly found inside.

The witness positively identified Rice's car as the one involved in the drive-by shooting, documents said. Three spent shell casings were found at the scene.
