ENERGY: Nuclear plant taken offline

Herald staff

The nuclear power plant outside Richland was taken offline Saturday night after hydraulic fluid was found leaking from an O-ring.

The leak affected the plant’s main turbine, so the Columbia Generating Station was taken offline so repairs could be made.

Mike Paoli, a spokesman for Energy Northwest, which operates the plant, said it’s unclear when the plant may return online.

“These things usually take a couple days, several days,” he said.

Paoli added, “It shouldn’t be long enough to disrupt the public power supply.”
