CRIME: SWAT Team arrests Kennewick man after reported assault, threat

Herald staff

Members of the Tri-Cities Regional SWAT team arrested a 21-year-old Kennewick man early today after he allegedly assaulted his wife and told her he would shoot police officers if they tried to apprehend him, Kennewick police said.

Kennewick police were called to an apartment in the 1600 block of West 5th Ave. shortly before 10 p.m. Friday after a woman said she had been assaulted by her husband. The woman also told police he would not let her take the couple’s two children with her — a 1-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl — and that her husband was drunk and had weapons.

When she told him she was calling police, the man reportedly told her he would shoot officers when they arrived, police said.

Officers arrived at the apartment and tried to contact the man, but he was asleep on a couch and had a rifle next to him, police said. Police also confirmed the children were in the apartment with him.

SWAT officers arrived, recovered the children and arrested the man without incident about 1 a.m., police said.

James D. Sams was booked into Benton County Jail on suspicion of assault domestic violence, police said.
