It’s game night, and I hope you all used your Herald Family Friday coupons. It’s too good an offer to pass up, unless you are a season-ticket holder.
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Lots of food and football at our family function in Walla Walla. When most everyone has a fantasy football team, it gets pretty heated. Megatron came up big for me as Detroit ended an 8-game slide on turkey day.
Tonight, Spokane coach Don Nachbaur will coach his 999th game in the WHL against the Tri-City Americans — his former team. No. 1,000 on Saturday, also will be against Tri-City, only at Spokane Arena.
Great for Don. Even though he went over to the dark side (i.e. Spokane), he’s one of the greatest coaches in WHL history. Proud to say I got to work with him for 6 years. I remember there was a time when he would say “I hate Spokane,” complete with his trademark scowl.
Tonight also marks the end of the Americans’ eight-game homestand. They are 6-1-0-0 in the run, with a loss to Everett on Nov. 9.
Saturday, the Americans begin a four-game road trip, starting in Spokane.
Tonight, Eric Comrie is in net for the Americans. He missed a couple days of practice this week, as he was under the weather, but he's fine and dandy now. He also had a couple of days with Montreal goaltender Carey Price, who practiced with the guys this week.
If you want to see a bunch of teenage hockey players get excited about something, bring an NHL All-Star goalie in for practice. It was priceless (no pun intended) to listen to them during practice shooting pucks on Carey — and not a one was going in the net.
Big news tonight. Jesse Mychan is back in the lineup after missing most of the month with a lower-body injury.
A big welcome to a trio of young players who came in for a few days to practice with the Americans. Ty Comrie (Eric's little brother, who is a forward, not a goalie), Riley Hillis and Brandon Carlo. Not too long from now, they will be zipping up and down the ice in red, white and blue.
Tri-City captain Justin Feser is one assist shy of 150 for his career. Hopefully we can see him get that tonight.
