Got a note from Ken Zimmerman, the patriarch of the Zimmerman soccer clan, the other day. He's done an amazing job raising three wonderful sons who not only have earned their reputation as great soccer players, but as men of character.
Of course, I can't leave out Megan, a freshman with a very bright future.
I have to wonder how tough it is to keep track of them all sometimes, though. Last year, while Derek and Megan were battling it out on the field for Pasco High School, Brandon was in his fourth season at Santa Clara University, earning all-West Coast Conference honors as a midfielder.
At the same time, Preston, the oldest sibling at 23-years-old, was continuing his career overseas as a striker. In June of last year, he signed with SV Darmstadt '98, a Tier III German club in the State of Hesse. There are several clips of Preston online, but Ken was kind enough to send me this latest one of a 2-1 Darmstadt win over Heidenheim.
You'll see Preston puts away the eventual game-winner at the 2:18 mark with a nice left-footed strike just inside the 18. After that, he even gets a few more chances (2:52, 5:39).
Here's another clip Ken sent along of Preston's goal in a 2-1 win over Munster.
At the 0:35 mark, he's in position at the near post on a cross, but the goalkeeper gets there first. Twenty seconds later, he makes a beautiful off-ball run and nearly finishes a nice cross in front of the net.
Finally, at 3:08, he receives a nice slotted ball past the defense, dribbles in and finishes with the left foot.
I'll upload more clips as I get them.
