We got squeezed for space in today's (Friday's) paper, so here are a few items that didn't make the wrestling roundup.
First, big win for Hanford's Joe Traverso with his 5-0 decision over Southridge's Kevin Del Angel at 170 pounds in their dual at Hanford. Del Angel has been on fire since coming back from an ankle injury suffered during football.
In that same dual, Southridge's Randy Harris posted a 13-9 win over Will Bishop at 195 in another battle of top-flight big guys. The Suns won the dual 34-23, posting their first CBBN 3A victory of the season.
Also, Columbia-Burbank's Zach Grimm posted a 3-2 win over Royal's Alex Myrick at 170 pounds in a battle of state placers. Grimm has had a strong season at 182, and if his drop is permanent, then the area's best weight is going to get a little better. Meanwhile, Myrick was bumping up from 160 (no shame in a loss like that), as did Royal teammate Brian Gallardo, who went up from 106 to 120 in an 11-2 loss to Daniel Percifield in another battle of state placers.
Never miss a local story.
Thursday marked the start of the SCAC East double-dual league season. However, the CBBN and CWAC seasons have long been in full swing.
In the CWAC, Ellensburg (5-0) and Othello (4-0) hold down the top two spots and are set to wrestle Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m.
In the Big Nine, the following Thursday (Jan. 19) will be a key date in both the 3A and 4A races.
That's when Pasco wrestles at Sunnyside in a what figures to be a battle of undefeated teams -- both have started 4-0 in league. Meanwhile, Chiawana will make a trek to Moses Lake on that day in another likely key matchup.
Chiawana already has a win over Eisenhower and has a big match with Richland on Tuesday. Moses Lake is ... well ... Moses Lake.
Looks like another thrilling January as we sprint headlong into the postseason.
