Emilio Renteria scored twice in the second half and the host Columbus Crew held on for a 2-1 victory over the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night in Major League Soccer.
Renteria converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute, then scored off a pass from Dejan Rusmir 9 minutes later for his third goal of the season.
Omar Salgado, the 17-year-old star selected first overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, scored his first MLS goal for Vancouver in the 69th minute.
“I’m very happy and hopefully there’s a lot more to come,” Salgado said. “It was disappointing we didn’t get back in the game. We should have tied it. We gave it our all.”
Salgado nearly got the equalizer in the 79th minute, but Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer stopped the shot.
That was the second of two close calls for the Crew (3-1-3). Moments earlier, defender Josh Gardner made a goal line block on Nizar Khalfan’s shot for the Whitecaps (1-4-3).
At Red Bulls 1, Sporting Kansas City 0: Luke Rodgers scored in the 22nd minute, his third goal in three games, and New York (4-1-2) won its third game in a row to take the Eastern Conference lead. Kansas City (1-4-1) is winless in five games.
At Union 1, Earthquakes 0: Former Seattle Sounders forward Sebastien Le Toux scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to help short-handed Philadelphia beat San Jose.
Le Toux scored after San Jose’s Jason Hernandez was whistled for a handball inside the goal crease.
Philadelphia (4-1-1) played a man down for the final 49 minutes after defender Jordan Harvey was issued a red card and ejected for violent conduct against Chris Leitch of San Jose (1-4-2).
Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon picked up his fourth shutout.
At Rapids 1, Fire 1: Andre Akpan scored in the 49th minute for Colorado (3-3-1) and the Rapids tied Chicago (1-3-3) to end a three-game losing streak.
Colorado also ended a 319-minute scoreless streak dating to Omar Cummings’ goal in the 90th minute against D.C. United on April 3.
Colorado’s Brian Mullan began a 10-game suspension for the tackle last week that broke Seattle star Steve Zakuani’s right leg.
At Timbers 1, Real Salt Lake 0: Kenny Cooper scored in the first half and goalkeeper Nick Rimando made it stand up as Portland (3-3-1) handed RSL (4-1-0) its first league loss of the season.
Cooper scored off a cross from Kalif Alhassan in the 22nd minute.
The expansion Timbers improved to 3-0-0 at home.
At Chivas USA 3, Revolution 0: Nick LaBrocca, Marcos Mondaini and Alejandro Moreno scored and Chivas USA (2-23) won its second straight game to run its unbeaten streak to five.
LaBrocca and Mondaini scored in the first half and Moreno added a goal in the second.
The Revolution (2-3-3) lost for the fourth time in a row to Chivas USA.
