BAKER CITY -- Kevin Martin has been named interim supervisor of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.
Martin is the supervisor of the Umatilla National Forest. The Baker City Herald reported that he will return to that job when a permanent replacement for departing supervisor Monica Schwalbach has been hired.
Schwalbach has taken a job with the Pacific Northwest Research Station in Portland, less than 1 1/2 years after she assumed responsibility for the Baker City-based forest.
In March, she released a plan to prohibit motor vehicles on about 3,900 miles of roads on the Wallowa-Whitman. Her decision angered many residents, and the plan was withdrawn less than a month later. Martin started last week.
